Wuling Motors Zhengtu

2026-10-03 05:50:00

The Wuling Zhengtu is the maiden pick-up truck model under the SAIC-GM-Wuling stable, officially launched in March 2021. Positioned as a "youth-oriented pick-up", it is tailored to cater to young entrepreneurs and micro-businesses through an accessible, highly practical proposition, effectively filling the void in the domestic RM60,000-class passenger-style pick-up segment.

Model Overview

The Wuling Zhengtu blends the hauling capability of a conventional pick-up with everyday passenger car comfort, serving as a concrete execution of Wuling's philosophy: "Building whatever the people need" in the pick-up segment.

Key highlights: Youth-oriented pick-up, entry-level commercial workhorse, exceptional value for money, flat cargo bed, three-way drop-side opening.

Design and styling: The exterior embraces a "mechanical aesthetic" design language, featuring Wuling’s signature rectangular front grille and crisp, robust lines paired with the red brand emblem to project a clean, utilitarian look. Inside, the cabin balances durability with modern flair, complete with a touchscreen infotainment display for enhanced convenience on the move.

Core proposition: Its primary appeal centres on "light-duty hauling and versatile utility". Compared to conventional full-size pick-ups, the Zhengtu sports more compact dimensions that make manoeuvring through tight urban streets and rural roads effortless, while its innovative "three-way drop-side flat cargo bed" significantly enhances loading practicality.

Development History

Background (early 2021): With the progressive relaxation of pick-up truck urban access restrictions in China and the resurgence of the micro-enterprise and night-market economy, market demand surged for small-displacement, cost-effective, and versatile entry-level pick-ups. Capitalising on this momentum, Wuling leveraged its proven high-volume platform architecture to swiftly develop and introduce the Zhengtu.

Official launch (March 2021): The Wuling Zhengtu officially debuted on 18 March 2021, offered in two variants: Jinqu and Kaituo. With aggressive pricing ranging from RM58,800 to RM62,800, it mounted a direct challenge against micro-trucks and entry-level pick-ups.

Model evolution: Since its debut, the vehicle has served as an integral part of Wuling’s commercial and entrepreneur-focused line-up, establishing itself as a robust, dependable workhorse for budding entrepreneurs embarking on their business journeys.

Market Performance

Market positioning: In the budget pick-up segment, the Wuling Zhengtu occupies a unique niche. Instead of going head-to-head with lifestyle or heavy-duty mid-to-large pick-ups like the GWM Poer and JMC Yuhu, it adopts a differentiated strategy against mainstream micro-trucks and basic pick-ups through aggressive cost control and cargo efficiency.

Owner feedback: The customer base primarily comprises sole proprietors, renovation contractors, and agricultural produce hauliers. Positive feedback centres on its affordability, low maintenance costs, and exceptional cargo deck space utilisation. The three-way drop-side flat deck proves exceptionally convenient for carrying irregularly shaped cargo. While its small-displacement engine means performance is modest under heavy loads on steep inclines, its frugal fuel consumption (around 7.0 L/100 km combined) keeps daily operating costs impressively low.

Core Technology

Powertrain architecture: Power comes from a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine (code LAR), outputting a maximum of 73 kW (approx. 99 hp) and 140 Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Derived from Wuling’s proven passenger car and commercial platform, this powertrain delivers mechanical simplicity, robust reliability, and low servicing costs, making it a quintessential, efficient workhorse setup.

Chassis and suspension: Built on a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, the chassis features a rigid live rear axle supported by a 6-leaf spring setup, striking a reliable balance between load-carrying capability and long-term durability.

Cargo deck engineering: The cargo bed is a key technical highlight, measuring 2,000 mm in length and equipped with three-way drop-down tailgates that expand into a flat 2-square-metre load floor. The cargo bed is factory-coated with a 1.2 mm industrial-grade polymer protective liner, delivering excellent impact, water, and corrosion resistance to guarantee bed longevity under heavy commercial use.

Future Plans

As of 2026, as a core pillar of the brand's commercial vehicle stable, the Wuling Zhengtu's forward-looking strategy focuses primarily on:

Application-specific variants: Developing versatile bespoke body conversions to meet specific trade requirements, including refrigerated box bodies for cold-chain produce transport and enclosed box conversions for logistics delivery.

Connected vehicle integration: Upgrading the on-board infotainment system with smart telematics to enhance digital trip and fleet logging, assisting micro-businesses with basic cargo tracking and route dispatching.

Electrification transition study: In line with the commercial vehicle sector's shift towards greener mobility, the brand continues to evaluate the feasibility of integrating electric powertrains onto the Zhengtu platform to comply with increasingly stringent urban emission standards.
